putting sound fx into a scene - evaluation

Sound Effects For this workshop we had to put sound fx as well ambience into a scene of out choice. I chose to use a scene from the wire. When deciding what sound effects to use i thought of the nature of the scene and also what kind of show the Wire is. I decided to add in gun shots, police sirens, background chatter, and the sound of someone smoking a cigarette. To get theses sound effects i had to go online and sign up to different sound libraries so i was able to find the perfect sounds and download them. Once i found the sounds i downloaded them and added them to my garage band. At first i took the sound off of the original so i just had the visuals, this made it easier to add my sounds and work out how loud i needed each sound to be. Once i had played around and work out where each part need to be i then added the original sound back in to see if it all worked. At first some of my sounds were too loud for the scene, such as the police sirens and gun shots were too loud and th...

Creating Own Music over a scene

For this workshop we had to create our own music to go over a scene. We were instructed to use garageband again to create the musical scores for our scene.  In this workshop i chose a scene from Incidious. I chose the scene as I thought I would be able to create some spooky music as it’s a scare scene from a horror movie. I felt like it would be me a challenger which it did and I enjoyed playing around with different instruments until I was able to find the perfect instrument and begin making my score. For this we created our own music to put over a scene. We used garageband to create and record our own sounds that we thought fit our chosen scene. I used musical typing to make the music. As i chose a horror film i wanted to have an eery, scary sort of sound. Once i played around a bit with the keyboard and i had a better understanding of how to use the musical typing, i  then began searching for different instruments. Garage band have a whole range and endlessly supply of...

Music over a scene

Putting music over a scene - The Wire (Omar's comin) For this workshop we put music into a scene. For my first scene I chose the scene from the Wire where Omar is coming outside and he walks through the outside area then he has a conversation with someone. This scene doesn't have any music in but has lots of background noise.  I chose to use an instrumental version of Dr Dre - Still D.R.E ft Snoop Dogg. I chose the song as i felt this genre of music fits the scene and i liked the way everything worked with the scene. Personally i thought it lifted the mood and gave the scene a new light, as when Omar starts walking outside the beat drops and it shows he's the one in charge. I also like the music as it adds something more to the scene and it shows Omar is someone you can’t play with and he’s the one in charge so I think the song adds that bit of power. At first i tried the scene with the explicit lyrics, but as i played around with it having a song with lyrics in didn...

Adding Voiceovers to Scenes - Evaluation

Devil Wears Prada clip The following clip is what i used to add my voice over on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qdHE9-8spU For this workshop we ha to add a voice over to a scene that didn't already have a voice over on currently. We discussed many different types of voice overs and how to do them then we proceed to do one ourselves. A voice overs are used to help establish a characters emotions, thoughts or opinions, flashbacks or simply used as a narrator. I chose to use a scene from Devil Wears Prada as i wanted to use a film with a strong female lead. I used garage band to record and edit. At first i tried talking directly into garageband  but found this didn't work as a lot of background noise got in it especially as i was recording in a class environment so it picked up everything. My next option was to use my headphones and talk into the microphone. This was much better as you could just hear my voice and it was much clear and  better to edit. When i tried this...

Dubbing Dialogue - Evaluation

For this i used the Mean Girls scene in the canteen. At first i watched the scene and had to write the script of the dialogue so that me and Sofia could work out which character we were going to play. I decided to be Regina and Sofia, Cady. We picked these characters as  felt i could do the role better and Sofia chose Cady as she preferred the dialogue. At first we turned the sound down in the scene - it wasn't completely muted - so we could partially hear what was said so it was easier for us to be in sync, we used headphone so we could record directly into GarageBand. Once we had recored we found this method didn't work as sharing a microphone proved that at parts the sound went in and out and caught in a feedback loop. For our second attempt we didn't use headphones and we spoke directly into the laptop, with sound from the video still there but this time once we listened to the recording back again, you could hear the recording and we weren't able to take the soun...

Fight Club

Fight Club uses more real life sound and effects, and many different types of sounds. It varies from voiceovers, to exaggerated sounds. The voice over in the film is simply called the narrator, as we know him. We find out of the narrators involvement with Tyler Durdan, who's the leader of fight club. We get to go into the characters deepest thoughts and know how he's feeling all through the voiceover. With the voiceover we can jump from scene to scene. A s it turns out Tyler Durden is a phantom, a delusion, a projection of the narrator. The voiceover is one of the most important uses of sound in the film. As the narrator is unreliable, the audience doesn't know whats real and whats fantasy
